Blogs are a good way of adding relevent topics and content to your site which will enrich your site and add material for search engines to index. If you add good content then visitors may link back to you, which again improves your search engine results....
Voice
Be honest in your blog. Be informative but don't oversell yourself or your services and your efforts may backfire, antagonising your audience and possibly driving your nascent audience away. Building value for visitors to your site so they come back is one major motivation for blogging. If you build a large enough audience you may even be able to turn you blog into a revenue stream in its own right through some advertising space.
A word or two about SPAM
Be careful about allowing unfettered access to postings and responses. Unfortunately there are hacker scripts running looking to post spam on any available blogs. While potentially annoying, this doesn't have to stop you from moving forward.
There are plugin components which can be added to your blog to automate spam filtering, but even if you use this approach you need to keep an eye on things or you may find someone found a way around and got some things on your site you don't like.
We suggest (and will set it up this way) that any reponses require administrative approval before appearing on your site, plus we suggest requiring registration from visitors before they can comment. The truth is that requiring registration may stifle participation, so if you really want a highly interactive blog then you may need to allow anonymous postings and then you'll need to be responsive to approve or deny submissions - everyone expects things to happen instantly on the Internet now!
